Having outmuscled Pakistan at Trent Bridge and Edgbaston and looking good for a series clean sweep, England have in their own peculiar way managed to generate renewed interest in the series thanks to two embarrassing batting collapses at The Oval which paved the way for a well-earned Pakistan victory and has left the series tantalizingly poised going into the final test at Lord's. With the series still not decided, the two sides meet on Thursday, 26th of Aug at Lord's where the fourth and final test of the series gets underway.

Matt Prior's gutsy unbeaten innings of 84 took England to 233 in their first essay at the Oval, after a dramatic opening day collapse. And though Alastair Cook's fighting century gave them a chance to come back into the game and seal the series, another capitulation from the middle order left Pakistan with only 148 to win. Graeme Swann and James Anderson yet managed to make a game of it, though Pakistan ultimately prevailed to stay alive.

Complacency, their old enemy, seems to have hit England after two mammoth wins. The spectacular failure of their batsmen is even harder to believe considering The Oval was one of the easier tracks to bat on in this series. While they collapsed against debutant Wahab Riaz in the first innings, the wily Saeed Ajmal was the chief assassin in the second, and though the youngsters were brilliant with the ball, a lack of application from the Englishmen was also on view.

Their senior pros in Andrew Strauss, Paul Collingwood and Kevin Pietersen have failed to impose themselves in the series, and one gets a feeling that Pakistan's abysmal performance with the bat in the first two tests masked England's failures in that department till now. To compound their woes, their top scorer for the series and the anchor of the midfield Jonathan Trott was also consumed cheaply making things difficult for his side at The Oval.

Despite the loss though, the England management has shown confidence in the side by naming an unchanged squad for the final test with Tim Bresnan the 12th man, giving their batsmen a shot at proving their detractors wrong. With a well-oiled bowling attack backing them up, Strauss would hope for a more focused approach from his batsmen going into the decider.

Pakistan:

Multiple factors have gone right in Pakistan's favour as Salman Butt's side came back into the series with a bang. The return of Mohammad Yousuf to provide much-needed solidity to the middle order, Wahab Riaz's excellent debut and a rise in the fielding standards have all been factors crucial to the win.

While the bowling had gone from strength to strength on the tour, the batting had been Pakistan's main worry and Yousuf's return to the side has seemed to have calmed the nerves. The inexperienced middle order has rallied around the veteran, with Azhar Ali scoring a fluent unbeaten 92 in the first innings, in the process taking Pakistan to their first 300+ score in the series.

The bowling has an enviable look to it with Riaz and Ajmal joining the impressive pace duo of Mohammad Aamer and Mohammad Asif and with Umar Gul too set to return to match fitness on the eve of the game, the team management would need to take some tough decisions. Gul's decent showing with the bat to go with his heroics with the ball in the first test make him a strong contender for a return to the eleven, though it remains to be seen if Riaz is benched after such a strong debut.

Likely Playing XI's:

England: Strauss (C), Cook, Trott, Pietersen, Collingwood, Morgan, Prior, Swann, Broad, Anderson, Finn.

Pakistan: Farhat, Hameed, Butt (C), Yousuf, Ali, Umar Akmal, Kamran Akmal, Aamer, Riaz, Ajmal, Asif.

Watch Out For:

Kevin Pietersen: A charmed 80 at Edgbaston aside, Pietersen has had a dismal series and is desperately in the need for a big knock. With Cook getting back in form, all eyes will be on Pietersen to deliver and the man himself would want to rediscover his magic before the Ashes series later this year.

Mohammad Yousuf: Playing a steady hand in both innings, this veteran performer proved his doubters wrong by getting right back into form without much match practice behind him. He was undone by Graeme Swann in the first innings after scoring a fluent fifty before Anderson yorked him with a beauty in the second, and Yousuf would be looking to make amends by closing the series in style at Lord's.

Form Guide:

Pakistan (WLLWL)
Aug 18-21, 2010: England vs. Pakistan: Pakistan won by 4 wickets
Aug 6-9, 2010: Pakistan v England: England won by 9 wickets

Jul 21-24, '10: Pakistan vs. Australia: Pakistan won by 3 wickets
Jul 13-16, '10: Pakistan vs. Australia: Australia won by 150 runs

Prediction: A series that was expected to be closely fought has finally come alive thanks to Pakistan getting their act together, and though the visitors' bowling attack looks the more threatening of the two sides, England still have better all round balance. Provided the batsmen play to their potential, England should put the Oval loss behind them to score a win at Lord's and take the series 3-1.
